    CA$H Greater Portland Seeking volunteers

    CA$H Greater Portland have heldped 2738 households save more than $400,000 in income tax filing fees by preparing income taxes for free. They are seeking volunteers for the 2010 tax preparation season. They will provide free training, that will allow you to become an IRS certified Tax Preparer, CA$H certified Financial Coach, or Greeter.     We Can Help Through our 888-995-HOPE hotline, the Homeownership Preservation Foundation has a single mission: to help homeowners avoid foreclosure. We are an independent nonprofit that provides HUD-approved counselors dedicated to helping homeowners.

    Ingraham Volunteers/Resource Link

    This organization has been providing assistance to Maine people who are struggling with the following issues:Mental illness, and Substance abuse issues. This link will connect you to 211 their resource guide to a variety of social service program information. This database includes statewide assistance program information for a wide range of services available to assist Mainers.

    Need Help with Heating Costs?

    For Cumberland County, contact the Peoples Regional Opportunity Program (PROP) by calling 874-1140. In York County contact York County Community Action Corp. by calling 324-5762. Be prepared to bring the following information when scheduled for an appointment:

    1.Names and Social Security numbers of all people living in the household.

    2.Proof of gross household income for the last 3 or 12 months (wages, Soc. Security, Unemployment, pension and disability payments).

    3.Proof of current address (rent receipt, lease, deed, or property tax bill).

    4.Recent copies of energy and utility bills.

    For those who do not qualify for LIHEAP funds, you may be able to receive assistance through MaineHousing, your town government, and local charities if it is an emergency situation.

    PLEASE NOTE: Due to large number of applicants, it is better to apply sooner rather than later!

    Portland Adult Education

    Portland Adult Education operates 52 weeks of the year, Monday through Friday, in sites throughout the city. The two major locations are at 150 Ocean Avenue 775-0432, which directs the Vocational and Community Life Programs, and 57 Douglass Street 874-8155, which directs the Academic Program.

    Support Group for Unemployed offered in Windham

    The Lakes Region Jobs Transition Netowrk will be holding its first meeting August 13, 2009 at 2pm. It will be held at the Parish Hall of the North Windham Union Church on Route 302 near Amato's. Meetings will be held the second and forth Thursdays of each month. Open to all area residents.

    Women Work and Community Program

    Women, Work, and Community is committed to improving the economic lives of Maine women and their families. We work with women "where they are" and provide them with support, guidance, and the tools they need to take the next steps toward a more promising future. We provide training, advocacy and assistance in four program areas:

    Workforce development, including career planning, employment, retention and advancement in jobs that pay a living wage; and access to education and skills training; Microenterprise development, including business plan development, start-up support and coaching, access to credit through a micro-loan fund, and linkages to on-going technical assistance; Asset development through a matched saving program, car and computer donations, and training in money management; Leadership development, including a curriculum that explores the workings of the local economy, women's roles in building community, and opportunities to practice leadership; a legislative awareness day, conferences, and outdoor adventure challenges.

    From 295 North or South: Take Franklin St. Arterial exit off 295. Turn right onto Marginal Way. Turn Left onto Preble Street (first light). Turn Left onto Lancaster Street

    From Congress Street: Head down Congress Street to Monument Square. You will see the Portland Public Library across from the square. Turn onto Elm Street. Go down Elm past Public Market and get into right lane. You will see the sign for the CareerCenter on the building at the corner of Elm and Lancaster. Take right onto Lancaster Street.

    Parking is provided in lots along the block. Do not park in 1 hour parking spaces
